Gum health is often neglected until it becomes a serious problem. Gum disease may begin with something minor – slight redness, occasional bleeding during brushing... However, these early signs can indicate the onset of a serious condition that, if left untreated, may lead to tooth loss.
In this blog, we explain how gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, how to recognize the symptoms, and what you can do to stop the disease early.
What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum inflammation. It occurs when dental plaque – a sticky bacterial film – is not removed through proper daily brushing. Toxins from plaque irritate the gums, causing inflammation.
Symptoms of gingivitis:
• Red, swollen gums
• Bleeding while brushing or flossing
• Mild gum discomfort
• Bad breath
The good news: Gingivitis is completely reversible if detected early and treated with professional cleaning and proper oral hygiene.
What happens if gingivitis is not treated?
If ignored, bacteria from plaque penetrate deeper beneath the gums, breaking down the tissue that holds the tooth in place. This marks the onset of periodontitis – a chronic condition affecting the tooth’s supporting structures: gums, bone, and periodontal ligament.
Stages of periodontitis progression:
Initial stage (mild periodontitis):
• Formation of periodontal pockets (space between gums and teeth)
• Gum recession
• Teeth appear longer, increased sensitivity
Moderate periodontitis:
• Loss of supporting bone and tissue
• Tooth mobility
• Foul odor from the mouth
Advanced periodontitis:
• Significant bone loss
• Teeth may fall out or require extraction
• Complex treatment needed, often involving surgery
How to prevent disease progression?
Prevention and early detection are key.
• Regular dental check-ups (at least twice a year)
• Professional tartar removal
• Proper oral hygiene (brushing + floss + interdental brushes)
• Healthy diet and avoiding smoking
