ORAL HYGIENE AFTER DENTAL IMPLANT PLACEMENT

Getting dental implants is a significant and valuable investment in your oral health – but the real success goes beyond the surgery. Long-term implant success heavily depends on proper oral hygiene.

If you've had implants placed – or plan to – here are essential care tips to ensure your implants last for decades.

Why is hygiene so important for implants?

While implants themselves can’t decay like natural teeth, they’re surrounded by living tissue – gums and bone – that can become infected if not maintained.

The main threat to implants: Peri-implantitis
This is inflammation around an implant, which can lead to bone loss, implant mobility, and even failure.

How to maintain hygiene after implant placement:

1. First few days – gently but regularly
• Avoid touching the surgical site for 24 hours
• Use antiseptic mouthwash (e.g., chlorhexidine) as directed
• Continue brushing other areas as usual, avoiding the surgical area

2. After healing – daily detailed care
• Tooth brushing (2x daily): Use a soft-bristle or electric toothbrush. Pay special attention to the gum–implant junction
• Implant floss: Use special implant floss with stiffened ends and soft middle to clean under bridges or around implants
• Interdental brushes: Ideal for cleaning between implants and adjacent teeth. Ensure proper size and gentle use
• Water flosser: Great for cleaning hard-to-reach areas, especially with multiple implants or bridges

Regular check-ups – key to implant longevity

Recommended follow-up after implant placement:
• Check-ups every 3 to 6 months during the first year
• Professional cleaning around implants
• Evaluation of gum health and implant stability

At each visit, your dentist will check for signs of inflammation, plaque accumulation, or bone level changes.

What to avoid?

• Inadequate brushing or skipping cleanings
• Smoking – significantly increases risk of peri-implantitis
• Hard foods immediately after placement
• Biting on objects (pens, nails...)

Your implants deserve care – because they replace natural teeth.
Dental implants can last 20 years or more, but only if we treat them as we would our natural teeth – with care, consistency, and professional attention.
